What we accept, and what we decline

Automated onboarding declines on structure and doesn’t say so. We publish ours first — so you know where you stand before you give us anything.

The criteria

Theme by theme

What we accept, what we decline, and why each one matters. If your business sits on the accept side of all five, an application is worth making.

Company type

Business accounts are for UK-registered companies. Personal accounts are planned for later, with their own criteria.

We accept

  • Private limited companies registered in the UK
  • Limited liability partnerships registered in the UK
  • Companies with a single director

We decline

  • Individuals and sole traders without a registered company
  • Companies registered outside the UK

Ownership

We need to know who ultimately owns and controls the company. How many steps it takes to get there is fine.

We accept

  • Directors or owners who live outside the UK
  • Ownership held through one or more holding companies, in the UK or abroad
  • Several shareholders, none of them a majority

We decline

  • Ownership we can’t trace to the people who ultimately own or control it
  • Arrangements designed to hide who owns the company

Trading history

Being new isn’t a risk on its own. Not being able to explain what you do is.

We accept

  • Newly incorporated companies
  • Companies trading for less than twelve months
  • Companies that haven’t filed accounts yet

We decline

  • Businesses that can’t tell us what they sell, to whom, and how they get paid

Income pattern

Lumpy income from several places is how a lot of modern businesses get paid.

We accept

  • Income that arrives irregularly, or in a few large payments
  • Income from several platforms or marketplaces
  • Income in pounds, euros and US dollars

We decline

  • Funds whose source can’t be evidenced
  • Holding or moving money for other people as your business

Sector

Most lawful sectors are fine. A few are outside our appetite, and always will be.

We accept

  • Creative and digital agencies
  • Recruitment agencies
  • E-commerce sellers
  • Consultancies and professional services

We decline

  • Gambling, and businesses that depend on gambling
  • Adult content
  • Any business subject to sanctions, or owned by anyone who is

The decision

A person, a deadline, an answer

No model has the final word. Here’s what happens after you submit.

5working daysfrom a complete application
  1. 01

    A person reads it

A named reviewer reads your application against the criteria on this page. A flag from a screening check is where they start, not the answer.

  2. 02

    Five working days

From a complete application. If something’s missing, we tell you what we need, and the five days start when it arrives.

  3. 03

    You hear back

Accepted, or declined. Either way from a person, in writing, inside the window.

What you hear back

One of three messages

Short, in writing, from a person. This is roughly what each one looks like.

Something’s missing

To finish your review, we need:

Proof of address for one director

Your five working days start when it arrives.

Accepted

Day 3

Your application has been accepted.

Next: set up secure sign-in and invite your team. Your pound, euro and dollar balances are ready.

Day 4

We can’t offer your company an account.

Our published criteria set out what we accept and decline. We don’t give individual reasons.

Why no individual reasons

The criteria are the explanation

Sometimes the law says we can’t
If a decline is about suspected financial crime, telling you would be a criminal offence called tipping off. We’re not allowed to explain it, or even hint.
So nobody gets one
If we gave reasons for some declines, the ones without a reason would say something on their own. One rule for everyone is the only fair version.
And everyone gets the criteria first
That’s the trade. Instead of a letter after the fact, the whole position is on this page before you apply — the same for every business.

Not sure where you’d land?

The pre-application check asks six questions and gives you an honest read. It runs in your browser and sends us nothing.
